Howard County Government Attempts to Sell Land it Bought in 2000

At the intersection of Route 40 East and Rogers Avenue sits a RiteAid Drug Store. Behind the store on your way to the current government buildings and the court houses is a 24.5 acre piece of land that former County Executive and current State Senator Jim Robey bought for Howard County in the year 2000. According to Howard County public tax records the land was sold by a Forty Twenty Nine Associates to the county for 3.175 million. 4029 Associates bought the land 14 years earlier from a Dora Willis for a whopping $132k.

At the time it was thought to be the perfect spot for a multi-building campus that would house all the government offices together rather than spreading them out as they currently are. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman decided that now is not the time to spend millions more to build this campus and is renovating 3 older buildings instead.

The land is listed for sale by Manekin Real Estate without a price. Since the land could be used for office, medical and or residential, it’s true value is hard to determine so the county government along with Manekin chose to put it up for sale without a price and ask any interested party to make an offer. Certainly they hope to make more than they paid (and if they don’t they will appear to be frivolous with taxpayer money) yet only time and the market will decide the final value.

2000 to 2009.
I know they won't get 30 times what they paid like the last guy did but I would hope they could get 2 times!! You are right Pat-only the market will determine that. Let us know what happens.
