Columbia Maryland Trivia!!-What Was There Before Union Jack’s?

My wife Kim and I went out to the new Union Jack’s British Pub last week and I was quite impressed.

I had the opportunity to meet the owner and I reminisced about how Kim and I both worked there at different times in our lives.

Kim when the building was occupied by The Sea Galley and myself at the awesome age of 15 when it was the glorious Family Fish House. I started out as a dishwasher and worked my way up after a year or so to bus boy!  The floor plan of the kitchens and bathrooms has not changed in 30 years so it always brings back memories when I walk towards the back.

The space’s new tenant wasn’t aware of The Family Fish House but I assured him it was once there.

My memory for that space across from the Mall ( in chronological order) is:

The Family Fish House

The Sea Galley

The American Cafe

That’s Amore

Union Jack’s

Let me know if you remember differently.

Anyway, the food was good. Much better than a real British Pub where your choices are Fish and Chips, Fish and Chips , Fish and Chips or an iceberg lettuce salad with mayonnaise. Union Jack’s offers American seafood dishes plus some British favorites like Shepherd’s Pie and Welsh Rarebit.

The pub itself features a large pub style area with high tables , a billiard and American Shuffleboard room and a separate more quiet dining area.

   That place has been everything! I have many fond memories of the American Cafe bar. In the early 90′s it was a hang out after Merriweather concerts. The bartenders were awesome! Sea Galley’s salad bar was massive back in the day.

   Pat,

   Your memory helps those of us who have not been here our whole lives continue to learn about the history of Columbia. Maybe in another post you can tell us how/why Kings Contrivance restaurant is in a housing area? or River Hill consisted of before it became a village.

   With respect to your “review” of Union Jack we may disagree. The decor is quite nice and the place has a great feel. I was very disappointed with the food quality; for instance the Shepard’s pie at Looney’s absolutely crushes Union Jack’s. Also we found their mixed drinks to be on the smaller side – also kiddie like glasses!

   On the positive, their bottled imported beer selection was nice and we had good service. I will try it again but so far, 1 strike in my book.

   PS – still walkin on the beach here in Negril….

   pat,

   i stumbled across your comments about the occupants of “that space” i haven’t been in that building in probably more than 20 years, but i have clear memories about being one of the last people to leave the “fish house” after we dismantled that place. i opened and closed the “sea galley” and then worked at the “am cafe.” some of the best time to be had were the 2 for 1′s, late night at the galley and pretty much running the “am cafe’s” late night scene with my boy scott broaddus.
