Artie’s Icecream in Clarksville Closes

Artie’s Ice Cream a Clarksville, Maryland monument of over 2 decades has decided to close “due to lease expiration”. Not sure if that means that the owner sold the building, which has been for sale for over a year or if it just simply means they used the expiration of their lease to move to a new location. The building behind Artie’s , the former Zepp Plaza recently changed hands from it’s owner, Howard Bank to a new owner who paid 3.7 million for the property. A large sign in the front boasts a new martial arts studio “coming Soon”.

   Wow!!
   Wonder what the deal is? Sounds fishy. Do you think the building sold and they are going to knock it down?
   What could they put there? The parking Sucks!

   Arties is already missed – too bad! From the sound of it, maybe their rent was increased dramatically which would make it almost impossible to keep a small business going. That sounds familiar, like the old Bunn Penny story in Columbia Mall. We (society) need to help keep the small, independent, businesses going. They are crucial to survival, they need to earn your money, but give them the first chance. Right in the area, try Jostin Cafe (on Ten Oaks Rd). They have great sandwiches, coffee, and they have ice cream too.

   i loved artie’s, just starting taking my little boy there this summer for ice cream.

   having said that, Jtime can you explain why small independent businesses are “critical to survival”? and if artie’s was around for 20 years, didn’t they ge the “first chance” you note? if nostalgia and quaintness is critical to survival, then i see your point. but, i don’t think they are.

   I have been going to Artie’s since before kindergarten. I am now in college and I will miss Artie’s. It was the only ice cream place I liked to go to, other ice cream stores just aren’t the same.
