Stanford Grill in Columbia gets 5 Stars for Ambiance

Contact Us | Stanford GrillMy wife and I visited Stanford Grill this weekend based on a recommendation from a good friend.

He told me is was perfect in every way. He was right. It reminded me of Huston’s or Houlihan’s. A casual atmosphere with better than average food selection.

The owners, Blue Ridge Restaurant Group paid a clean 2.1 Million for the building and land to the former owners of the old Lone Star Steakhouse and have obviously spent a ton more on new improvements inside and out!!! . These guys or gals own 5 Copper Canyon restaurants and are testing out a new menu here.

Just like it’s neighbors, Nottingham’s , the place is a bear to find, but once you find it it’s a destination you’ll want to return to. Without the return customer it will most likely suffer from the same fate that Lone Star did before it. It’s got to be a purposeful destination as Nottingham’s has been.Contact Us | Stanford Grill-1My wife and her best friend Gina loved sitting out on the patio and looking out at  their second home, Target .

The food was great. The service was great and the ambiance was better than great. We waited for our table outside on the patio on some couches that surrounded an outdoor fireplace. It reminded me of the patio at the Phoenician Resort in Arizona. It appears there are heaters on the ceilings outside so this delightful patio could be open during multiple seasons. Their was an outdoor bar in addition to the indoor bar and the bartender jumped right on us as we sat down and got us cold drinks. Our waiter was very attentive, but I have to admit he accidently switched the specials in his mind and brought me trout when I thought I was getting tuna. He made up for it by over apologizing and comping the entree for me.  I’ll definitely be back.

REI to open in Columbia Crossing

Google Image Result for http___brightcellar.com__graphics_rei_logo.jpgREI announced recently that it will finally open a Columbia Maryland location!! This will be REI’s 4th Maryland store.

I love REI. I have used REI adventures twice to plan my hikes through Slovenia and Kilimanjaro and have always bought my camping and hiking gear through them. Matter of fact , my daughter and I were at the college park store just last week and I was miffed that the supposed Columbia location never opened off of 175 and 108 as was rumored several years ago. The space next to Best Buy remained empty for a long time giving hope that they may still come to town. Now it appears it is being subdivided and REI has committed to new space in Columbia Crossing.

Jim Bodine, Long and Foster, 36 Year Real Estate Veteran , Passes Away

Jim Bodine_s Featured ListingsHoward County Real Estate Veteran Jim Bodine of  Long and Foster Real Estate passed away unexpectedly on Friday. Shortly after faxing over a contract to a co op agent , Jim collapsed from a massive heart attack and died at his Long and Foster office in Clarksville, Maryland. To all who knew Jim he was one of the best Realtors and human beings the real estate community had. Ironically, on Sunday,  the contract came back over the fax machine, ratified.

His viewing and funeral , held at Witzke’s Funeral Home in Ellicott City was a standing room only event. Pam Stevens, Office Manager from Re/Max Advantage Realty in Columbia Eulogized Jim by reminiscing about their days together (with many other top Realtors) at Urban Properties in the 1970’s. “Jim was the driving force behind Urban Properties being the number one office in Howard County year after year!” exclaimed Pam. Jim went on to form his own Real Estate Brokerage “Best Realty Group” in the late 80’s and then eventually joined forces with Long and Foster.

Jim was responsible for training and  raising  several agents in the room, including his step son ,Steve Allnutt, top agent of Re/Max Advantage Realty in Fulton. One agent drove down from Ocean City, Maryland just for the funeral. Never even meeting Jim before, Jim entrusted him with a referral of a client just 24 hours before he passed and made such an impression on this man that he came to pay his respects.

I can remember in about 1990, I interviewed a few times with Jim with regards to joining his company , Best Realty Group. Each time I went there he wouldn’t let me leave without a piece of new sales knowledge. I’ll never forget he taught me the classic Ben Franklin Close, where you list the pros and cons on a piece of paper in columns. Among other techniques he taught me ,  I have used that Ben Franklin Close countless times with buyers and sellers in my life. Thank You Jim for that.

I’ll remember Jim as an agent that had more knowledge than most (so you didn’t have explain much to him). He got it. Always available, always approachable, always happy to hear your voice. We did multiple deals together over the years and I can’t remember a single one with any problems that were not solved right away. The Bodine and Allnutt families have lost a beautiful man but as Jim’s brother in law eulogized last night , “We have all gained a guardian angel”.

Rest In Peace Jim.

Columbia Maryland Trivia!!-What Was There Before Union Jack’s?

Union Jack_s British Pub of Bethesda

My wife Kim and I went out to the new Union Jack’s British Pub last week and I was quite impressed.

I had the opportunity to meet the owner and I reminisced about how Kim and I both worked there at different times in our lives.

Kim when the building was occupied by The Sea Galley and myself at the awesome age of 15 when it was the glorious Family Fish House. I started out as a dishwasher and worked my way up after a year or so to bus boy!  The floor plan of the kitchens and bathrooms has not changed in 30 years so it always brings back memories when I walk towards the back.

The space’s new tenant wasn’t aware of The Family Fish House but I assured him it was once there.

My memory for that space across from the Mall ( in chronological order) is:

The Family Fish House

The Sea Galley

The American Cafe

That’s Amore

Union Jack’s

Let me know if you remember differently.

Good Columbia Trivia!

Anyway, the food was good. Much better than a real British Pub where your choices are Fish and Chips, Fish and Chips , Fish and Chips or an iceberg lettuce salad with mayonnaise. Union Jack’s offers American seafood dishes plus some British favorites like Shepherd’s Pie and Welsh Rarebit.

The pub itself features a large pub style area with high tables , a billiard and American Shuffleboard room and a separate more quiet dining area.

Go check it out!

Kloby’s BBQ hits the spot in Fulton, Maryland near Applied Physics Lab Because Facci was Full!!

Kloby's Smokehouse

Kloby's Smokehouse

My wife and I went decided to go out to dinner on Saturday night and we had heard about this happening new joint called Facci that used to be the Pasta Blitz in the Montpilier  2 shopping center in Fulton.

Facci Ristorante PhotosWhen we rolled in at about 7.00 p.m. the wait was 75 minutes so we strolled down to Kloby’s Smokehouse.
I had the smoked salmon and Kim had the beef brisket.
Both were dynamite!! We sat at the bar and the beer was ice cold and the country music playing in the back ground reminded me of  the taverns I used to frequent back in my college days in Western Maryland.
Every restaurant in the shopping center was packed!
The Montpilier Shopping Center 2 is located at :
7530 Montpelier Road Laurel MD 20723
Enjoy!!!

Bikram Yoga in Columbia Kicks my Butt

BikramBikram 2Bikram 3

Around the holidays I started going to Bikram Yoga Columbia .

I’ve been there 8 times since the holidays and I have to say it’s a great workout.

I chose Bikram Yoga Columbia at first because they have classes early in the morning.

Most studios have classes in the daytime which only work for those who don’t work (or work a night shift!). Basically it’s yoga for 90 minutes in a room that is 104 degrees. You sweat like crazy (which releases toxins) and you bend in ways that hurt. I can’t say it’s “enjoyable” but I can say it is making a big difference in my balance and flexibility. And I feel really good and clean afterwards. Very peaceful. They have a great program where you can try it out for 10 days (as many times as you want ) for about $25.00

It’s located off Oakland Mills Road near the post office.

Imperial Capital Bank Seized by Regulators

Imperial Capital Bank with an office at 200 St. Paul Street in the city was seized Friday by regulators and sold to City National Bank.

Imperial has lost 112 million dollars so far this year with only 9 branches. It’s Baltimore branch was it’s only East Coast branch. It’s troubles came from unpaid loans used to build apartments and commercial buildings. Regulators gave the bank a deadline of December 14th to raise 200 million in capital and when the deadline came and went they were quick to seize the bank and even quicker to sell it to City National. City National has said that it will honor all the deposits with the bank even those that are not covered by the FDIC limits.
The fate of the St. Paul Street site remains undetermined but City says all employees health benefits will be paid through the holidays.

Howard County Government Attempts to Sell Land it Bought in 2000

At the intersection of Route 40 East and Rogers Avenue sits a RiteAid Drug Store. Behind the store on your way to the current government buildings and the court houses is a 24.5 acre piece of land that former County Executive and current State Senator Jim Robey bought for Howard County in the year 2000. According to Howard County public tax records the land was sold by a Forty Twenty Nine Associates to the county for 3.175 million. 4029 Associates bought the land 14 years earlier from a Dora Willis for a whopping $132k.
At the time it was thought to be the perfect spot for a multi-building campus that would house all the government offices together rather than spreading them out as they currently are. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman decided that now is not the time to spend millions more to build this campus and is renovating 3 older buildings instead.
The land is listed for sale by Manekin Real Estate without a price. Since the land could be used for office, medical and or residential, it’s true value is hard to determine so the county government along with Manekin chose to put it up for sale without a price and ask any interested party to make an offer. Certainly they hope to make more than they paid (and if they don’t they will appear to be frivolous with taxpayer money) yet only time and the market will decide the final value.
